Equal value was held, and reverent respect given to dream experiences, whether related or unrelated to the professional creative work of the three participants.Joseph Campbell, perhaps the world’s best known navigator of mythology and dream spaces, famously said that “Myths are public dreams. They all have felt a connection between dreams and a mystical source energy, and have energetically expressed its messages in their creative work, which has also brought new meaning to their dreams in the context of their lives. The participants have had dreams that have given them: inspiration, ideas, visions, messages, and advice for their creative work.

The data were analyzed using Giorgi’s method of descriptive phenomenological psychological inquiry.

I interviewed three professional creative artists about how they link their dreams to their creative work and/or experience creativity in their dreams. The experienced links between dreams and creativity in the work of professional creative artists needs additional research. The value of weaving between dreaming and waking realities creatively is important, but under-recognized by mainstream society. The implications are then discussed in terms of the general relationship between music and dreaming, the connection between the dreaming experience and the artistic experience, the continuity theory between dreaming and waking life, and the role of dreaming in the cognitive science of religion. This paper describes the rationale underlying the connection between these phenomena.

This psychoesthetic effect can be accounted for by two psychological phenomena that at first sight do not seem to be related to each other: the perception of higher pitches as being located in higher space, and the archetypical idea, amply highlighted by anthropological research, of dreaming as the wandering of the soul over celestial territories. This kind of shift also plays the artistic role of dream evocation in musical compositions that, although not overtly, are however implicitly related to dreaming. In several famous musical compositions a maintained melodic shift to higher pitches has been overtly exploited to represent the dreaming experience.
